The Tsitsikamma forests on the Garden Route in South Africa is home to the Misty Mountain Reserve where you will find the Misty Mountain Lodge. The word “tsitsikamma” means “place of many waters” in the language of the first inhabitants to the area, the Khoisan people. The region stretches from the Bloukrans River (west) to the Eerste River (east), and is bordered by the Indian Ocean and the Tsitsikamma Mountains. The indigenous forests of this part of the coastline of the Eastern Cape have inspired many legends and stories – perhaps the most well-known of these are the books by the South African author, Dalene Matthee. It is easy to see why: huge, age-old indigenous trees (such as yellowwood and stinkwood), as well as gorges with waterfalls surrounded by fynbos and various species of ferns create an experience waiting to be explored. The Misty Mountain Reserve borders on the well-known marine reserve, the Tsitsikamma National Park. In addition to it being among the most picturesque on the Eastern Cape coastline, the area harbours an extremely delicate marine ecosystem. The Misty Mountain Reserve offer premier lodge accommodation in a number of self-catering ( self contained ) wooden chalets. The chalets at Misty Mountain overlook the mountains, Indian Ocean and forest – ideal for guests who want to let nature soothe away their city stress. The vicinity of the Misty Mountain Lodge offers a myriad of activities. Mountain bike trials, paths for joggers, fishing in one of two dams at the Misty Mountain Reserve (bring your own bass/fly rods), walks in pristine forest along clearly marked routes, birdwatching (the area is home to the Knysna Loerie), whale-watching (in season) or picnics in the forest (order a delicious picnic basket from reception) will make your stay unforgettable. If you don’t feel like doing much, relax next to the swimming pool or watch the dolphins playing in the surf. Adventure activities that can be organised by the staff of Misty Mountain include a “tree top tour” (you glide from one tree top to another via a series of cables). If you are really very brave, why not try the world’s highest bungee jump from the Bloukrans Bridge? |
